The bits that look like wings are shields to stop spray from getting into the prop.

Get ready for take-off!

The boat lifts itself on to the skis.
Now you see why the spray shields were necessary.

This boat does not care if the water is frozen.

A pair of experimental stepped-hull hydroplane powerboats provided some wacky racing fun back in the 1980's. Almost uncontrollable!
